Three sterling silver necklaces worn at different lengths

How to Choose the Right Necklace Length

Necklace length changes how a piece frames the face, works with a neckline, and layers with other jewelry. A few simple measurements can help you choose with confidence.

Start With a Necklace You Already Own

Lay a necklace that fits you well on a flat surface and measure it from end to end, including the clasp. Record the result in inches first and centimeters second.

Common Necklace Lengths

  • 16 in / 41 cm: Usually sits close to the base of the neck.
  • 18 in / 46 cm: A versatile length that often rests near the collarbone.
  • 20 in / 51 cm: Falls slightly lower and works well with open necklines or layered looks.

These positions are approximate. Height, neck circumference, body shape, bead size, and pendant weight can all affect where a necklace rests.

Consider the Neckline

Shorter necklaces work well with open collars and crew necks, while longer styles can complement V-necks, button-down shirts, and layered outfits. If the necklace includes larger pearls or gemstones, allow the materials to remain the visual focus.

Planning a Layered Look

Choose lengths with enough separation to keep each piece visible. A difference of about 2 in / 5 cm between necklaces is a useful starting point, though larger beads or pendants may need more space.
